For Birdwatchers

Two Parrots Found Nowhere Else

Dominica is the only place in the world to see the Sisserou parrot, the national bird, alongside the more common Jaco. The Syndicate area north of Portsmouth is one of the better places to look, and early mornings from a nearby base give you the best odds.

Staying in the north means you can be on the trail at first light rather than driving across the island to get there.

Planning Questions

Experiences Frequently Asked Questions

Cabrits National Park and Fort Shirley are the closest, on the headland just north of Portsmouth, followed by the Indian River. Both make an easy half-day from the cottages.

Yes, though it’s a full day — the trailhead is in the south, so plan an early start. Boiling Lake is a demanding hike best done with a guide.

The Syndicate Nature Trail, north of Portsmouth toward Morne Diablotin, is one of the better spots. Go early in the morning for the best chance.

Most national parks and nature sites charge a small entry fee. A single-site pass or a week pass covering all sites is available — carry one for hikes and park visits.

Yes — there’s quiet snorkeling around Picard and the north coast, while Champagne Reef, a well-known spot, is a day trip toward the southwest.

A car makes the island much easier to explore independently, especially for the trailheads. Some trips, like the Indian River, are close enough to reach without much driving.
